Highschool survival - "Just shoot me, I hate reading!" strategies to make a better reader out of yourself

Sure, you know how to read.  But do you know different WAYS to read?  Reading is more than just decoding the words.  You aren't really reading unless you are getting some MEANING from what you read.
Not every reading assignment for school should be read in the same way.  For example, you should read a chapter in your history book differently than you read a short story in your English class.  Taking a different approach to each of these assignments will help you get some MEANING from them.  THIS is reading.
Try this with yournext reading assignment:

  • Read fiction or something you like, this will get you started to help you learn how to retain what you read!

Your vocabulary and reading skills work together, so learning the words helps you read. If you can't pronounce a word or don't know the meaning, highlight the word in your read (or underline lightly if it's a school book) and use the context clues in passage to determine the meaning. If all else fails you can always look-up the word in a dictionary (if it is permitted).
